It seems like most small businesses struggle to consistently find and post relevant pictures on their social media accounts.  Some are doing a great job, but others might need a little help.

Pictures sell your brand.  They can be one of the most helpful tools in promoting your products, story, and company as a whole. Where do you get high quality pictures, though?

If you have a nice camera, or some design skills, you are probably in luck. Instead of browsing the internet trying to find relevant images, it’s time for you to get up and create your own content.

Below is a list of our top ten sources for visual content, and some of them are bound to be relevant to any type of business. Give it a read, and start getting some great pictures!

If you have a nice camera, it’s time to use it.

Odds are, you have a decent camera at your disposal. If you need to, you can always borrow one from a friend.  You can also have a professional photographer come in if you have the extra money to spend – the results will probably be worth it. Here are some things to photograph:

1) Take some pictures of your physical location.

Try taking some artsy photos around the business that capture your brand's message. Overlaid graphics never hurt either!

Odds are your business has the potential to be photographed in an appealing way. Look around, adjust lighting, and maybe even move things around to set up interesting, aesthetically pleasing shots.

Try to get them to fall in line with your brand image.

Do you want to give off a rustic feel? Try taking pictures in low, natural lighting. Want to showcase your innovative technology? Photograph your machinery and equipment. Focus on the point you want to get across in your pictures; it will help you think of subject matter as well as optimal shooting conditions.

2) Get your employees in some pictures.

Your employees are the life blood of your business. Take pictures of them working, and take some posed shots as well. Try to capture emotions that define your employees and your brand. Show your customers exactly who is behind the business. This will help your audience develop a connection to your brand, as it facilitates a trusting environment.

3) Showcase your products.

Photos of your products can equal more sales.

Photos of your products can equal more sales.

This may seem overly obvious, but it’s very common for businesses to lack high quality photos of their own products. If someone is going to make a purchase from you, they want to see exactly what they’re buying. Take detailed, high resolution pictures of your products, from various angles if possible, and put them on your website.

Show off cool features, great details, and defining features.  The point is to show the consumer exactly what they’re purchasing. When you do this, the customer will feel much more comfortable spending money on your products. You also have the benefit of being able to share these pictures on any of your social media pages for your fan-base to see.

4)  Don’t forget about services.

It’s not easy to showcase your services. Often times, they’re not tangible, so how do you take a picture of them? Luckily, there are some tricks to turning your services into quality photos.

If you have a digital service, try taking some pictures of a computer with your website open. Making the shot artsy won’t hurt, and this approach actually provides a lot of room for creativity if your location is visually appealing. Does your business have a customer oriented approach? Snap some pics of employees helping happy customers – when genuine, photos like this always help build trust.

5) Customers make good pictures.

While we’re on the subject of happy customers, don’t forget to take some pictures of them using your products and services. Get creative and make them look good! You need to get their permission if you want to post pictures of them, so try to capture their best side.

6) Photograph your previous work.

Many businesses have their work spread all over the place. Think about how you’ve helped your customers in the past. Did you install a fence for them? Get their permission and take some photos of it. Maybe you built a deck, or repainted a house. Take pictures of these locations to show what you can do.

Out of ideas for photographs? Design something and upload it .

Sometimes you won’t can’t use photos – they aren’t right for every situation.  If you still want to post something visual, what can you use instead? Luckily, there are some other alternatives.

Hand drawn designs are great when you don't want to use a photo.

7) Create a hand-made design.

If you’re artistically inclined, this one may be for you. Show off your skills by drawing, painting, or carving something you want to upload. Scan it and upload it your pages for the world to see. Some businesses are art based, so obviously this concept applies heavily to them. You need to showcase your art if you want to gain exposure. Photographing it is always an option, but some people prefer to scan flat works.

8) Make a computer generated image.

Many people can not create images with their hands. Instead, they prefer to use computer design programs to bring their ideas to life. I personally prefer this method, and create almost all of my design work in Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop.

If you already know how to use these programs, you’re probably all set. If not, you can always take some time to learn them, or hire a professional to do some graphic design work. Digital content is especially nice because it is created on the computer – it does not need to be scanned or photographed. Once you have a design you like, it just needs to be uploaded to the internet.

9) Turn information into something visual.
